International Cooperation

Working in collaboration with the Asian Urban Information Center of Kobe (AUICK)

KIC works with the Asian Urban Information Center of Kobe (AUICK), which was established by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and Kobe City. Partnerships have been established with nine medium-sized cities* to address urban problems faced by developing countries in Asia. Various international cooperation programs are under way to help internationalize the region via citizens' participation.

* The nine cities of Chittagong (Bangladesh), Weihai (China), Chennai (India), Surabaya (Indonesia), Kuantan (Malaysia), Faisalabad (Pakistan), Olongapo (Philippines), Khon Kaen (Thailand), and Danang (Vietnam) are referred to as AUICK Associate Cities.

Urban policy training programs

Government officials and academic experts in various fields are invited from AUICK Associate Cities to learn about population and urban problems and to find solutions. Training programs, which are offered every year on a specific theme, comprise lessons about measures taken by Kobe City, visits to facilities, case studies, discussions, and workshops.

Special research programs

Data on population and urban problems in AUICK Associate Cities are gathered, and successful cases of improving government services are surveyed and researched. The results of these activities are publicized.

International cooperation programs by senior volunteers

To assist projects in AUICK Associate Cities for addressing population and urban problems, experts aged around 60 or older (including company retirees with the required skills and expertise) who live in Kobe are registered as volunteers and dispatched as needed.

Awareness-raising programs for international cooperation

Asian Cities and People, an English newsletter offering information about urban policies in Asia, is issued twice a year, and publications are posted on AUICK's website to distribute information worldwide.
Seminars are also hosted to help citizens learn about international cooperation and communications.

Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) commissioned training programs

KIC is commissioned to undertake technical cooperation programs organized and implemented by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). These projects are designed to give developing countries the skills required to address their own challenges to ensure sustainable, long-lasting, and effective development. KIC draws up specific plans to conduct training programs focused on urban management, post-disaster reconstruction, and disaster prevention (in which Kobe City has expertise) in cooperation with academic institutions and private companies.

Asian Development Bank (ADB) commissioned training programs

KIC undertakes public policy training programs for national and local government officials of Laos commissioned by ADB. KIC creates plans and runs programs in collaboration with Kobe University Graduate School of International Cooperation Studies (GSICS). These training programs provide the knowledge and skills required to increase the efficiency of public services that meet the needs of Laotian citizens.
